The lifeguard award is held with the International Life Saving Federation (ILS) and The Royal Lifesaving Society (RLSS). It is valid worldwide as a lifeguard award and is required in order to validate any surf instructor awards held with the International Surfing Association (ISA) or British Surfing Association (BSA). This course is aimed at anyone who is serious about surfing for the rest of their lives. It will build your confidence and competence in the variety of situations which you will inevitably find yourself in as a surfer. It's also a lot of fun but not for the faint hearted. The training involves running, swimming, rescuing and dragging casualties through the surf zone and up the beach using rescue boards and rescue tubes. The course also covers first aid theory, basic life support and spinal management. Candidates must be over 16 years of age, physically fit and able to swim 400 meters in under 8 mins.

The surf coach course qualifies you as a Level 1or Level 2 Surf Coach with the International Surfing Association (ISA) and British Surfing Association (BSA) when combined with the beach lifeguard award.
The Surf Coach Awards are aimed at individuals, with experience of surfing, who are new to surf coaching and who wish to coach basic surfing techniques. The Level 1 Award is the minimum requirement for Surf Club Coaches, School Teachers and others wishing to teach the sport as BSA/ISA Accredited Coaches. The Level 2 award is open to candidates who can demonstrate teaching or coaching experience in other fields and at least two years personal surfing experience. You will need to demonstrate that you are able to paddle outback, catch green waves and ride right and left whilst performing basic manoeuvres and are competent to coach surfers (on land and in the water) from beginners (never surfed before) a novice level surfing in unbroken waves. All awards are valid for three years from the date of the coaching accreditation course or until the relevant lifesaving qualification expires (whichever is earlier). The course covers all aspects of surf education including surf safety, surfing & coaching techniques along with group management.

Combining the two courses is ideal for candidates wishing to become qualified as a surf coach but who do not already have an up to date lifeguard award. The two courses run sequentially making combining the two qualifications convenient and cost effective. These qualifications will give you the opportunity to work as a surf instructor throughout the world. More than that though the challenge of taking part on the course is a lot of fun and extremely rewarding in itself. Check out the movie to see what happened last year.
